The Importance of Energy Efficiency (EE) to CT

Energy saved is the cleanest energy of all. It is a low-cost, high-return strategy that reduces strain on our electric grid, cuts carbon emissions, and lowers air and water pollution. For residential and commercial buildings alike, energy efficiency is the critical first step in any plan to battle climate change and its far-reaching environmental and health impacts. Efficiency programs also serve a vital role in educating Connecticut residents on how saving energy supports our state’s climate goals. This website and its reports provide a broad overview of why efficiency must always be the foundation of any energy strategy.

The studies and data collected here are distributed for use by key stakeholders, decision-makers, program administrators, board members, and legislators. This data demonstrates the importance of assessing a residence using proven, building-science-based BPI (Building Performance Institute) assessments prior to installing upgrades or providing state-subsidized financing tools.

As we progress the building science industry state-wide, we maintain a dual focus: providing national data to protect the best interests of Connecticut ratepayers, and deploying innovative models that keep clean energy wealth in local neighborhoods.

This foundation is what makes our POP (Power Our People) program possible. Spearheaded by our team with 20 years of frontline community experience, POP takes the next step beyond traditional weatherization. For income-eligible families who face the highest utility burdens, POP installs rooftop solar panels and emergency battery storage at zero cost—without loans, interest, or credit barriers. A monthly credit goes directly onto the family’s electric bill to provide immediate financial relief. The rest of the solar income returns to a fund restricted to POP that installs solar and battery backup on the next home in line, so each investment keeps working. Efficiency comes first: homes are weatherized through Home Energy Solutions and state repair programs before solar is added.

To bring this vision to life, we are officially launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise the vital seed money needed to fund the first phase of home installations. Every dollar donated keeps working: our goal is a pilot with about 24 Hartford families, then about 100 families over five years, with recovered capital reaching more families every year after that.

Our dedicated contractor base continues to raise the bar on executing this full spectrum of care—from initial BPI home assessments, health & safety remediation, air sealing, insulation, and upgrades like insulation and windows to advanced renewable solar and battery storage deployment. Together, energy efficiency and the POP framework ensure that the benefits of clean energy belong in Connecticut kitchens, protecting our residents and transforming our communities for generations to come.
