POP – Power Our People

Our Mission

Clean energy wealth belongs in Connecticut kitchens, not bank vaults.

For 20 years, our team has worked inside the homes of Connecticut’s low-income families. Now we’re putting solar and backup batteries on their roofs at no cost, and sending the savings back to them.

  • ✓ Up to $125 a month paid directly onto the family’s electric bill
  • ✓ Battery backup when the grid goes down
  • ✓ Families never owe a cent. It’s not a loan.

The Pay-It-Forward Solar Model

One investment that keeps working

Most home solar is paid for with loans and leases, so much of its value flows to lenders. Our model keeps that value in the neighborhood and sends it to families, homeowners and renters alike.

The usual way

Solar value → Lenders & leasing companies

Families who can’t afford panels or don’t qualify for credit are left out entirely.

Our way

Solar value → Families + the next home

No upfront cost, no credit check, nothing to pay back. The money stays in the community.

1

The sun produces the power

We install solar panels and two backup batteries on an income-eligible home, owned or rented, at no cost. The power is sold to the grid.

2

Immediate relief

Up to $125 a month goes directly onto the family’s electric bill: money for groceries, medicine or heat.

3

Paying it forward

The rest of the solar income recovers the system’s cost and refills a fund that installs solar on the next family’s home.

4

Ownership

After about 11 years, the system belongs to the homeowner. Renters are protected: rent can’t go up because of the system.

The cycle repeats. Our planning model projects that $5 million could reach about 386 homes by year 20, as each home’s solar income helps fund the next. (Projection, not a guarantee.)

Our Story

20 years inside Connecticut homes

Our team has walked into the homes of low-income families all over Connecticut, in environmental justice and distressed communities from Hartford to the coast. Behind closed doors, most of these families live week to week, choosing between food, medical care and heat.

Many of these homes are drafty and under-insulated, and Connecticut’s electricity rates are among the highest in the country. Every month the bills drain the family budget and take away any chance to save or build wealth to pass down.

This program isn’t a sudden idea. It comes from 20 years of frontline work, data and relationships with the communities we serve. Since 2017, we’ve done that work as Efficiency For All, a Connecticut 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

  • POP is a proposed program. Installations depend on funding.

Your gift is seed money that keeps working

Every dollar helps put solar and backup power on a Connecticut family’s home, and the money each home earns back helps fund the next one.
